PM addresses nation, outlines plans

24 December, 2010

Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu'ivakano

THE Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu’ivakano made his first official address to the public at 7pm last evening, laying out key areas his government plans to address in the future.

Lord Tu’ivakano began by thanking His Majesty King George Tupou V and the Royal Family for their “godly leadership and deep affection shown towards the country since ancient times.”

He thanked the King and Members of Parliament for selecting him to lead, following the political reform process “carried out and completed by the Royal line”.

Speaking for the people of Tonga, Lord Tu’ivakano apologised to His Majesty for the riots that took place on November 16, 2006, which destroyed most of the capital’s business district.

“We promise our steadfast love, respect and protection of the land,” he said.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the former government’s endurance through the global economic crisis, and achievements in various sectors despite financial challenges.

Focus areas

Lord Tu’ivakano briefly mentioned future developments in the economy, education, law and order, health sector, and foreign affairs.

“Economically, despite decreases in key sources of revenue, such as exports, taxes and tariffs on imports, as well as remittances, we are still able to cover necessities, owing to assistance and aid from overseas.

The challenge for today is to contain expenses, while promoting productive businesses,” he announced.

Developments in technical and vocational training programs for youth, as well as in the Police and Health departments will continue.

Foreign affairs is also high priority, especially in bringing in financial and development assistance.

“Our relations, cooperation and mutual respect fostered with overseas governments is precious, and absolutely essential to developing our nation. Today, these relationships are robust and healthy, and continue to improve.”

Tu’ivakano ended with a call for national unity and keeping traditional values of kin relations, community, and respect for His Majesty.
